Universal Test Machine

SCHAP’s Universal Test Machine (UTM) Tester performs automatically-controlled foam ILD-IFD tester functions like a UTM. The load cell mounting plate utilizes four pre-loaded compression springs for load cell damage resistance. A universal joint can be mounted above the load cell to reduce torsional loading on uneven test surfaces. An internal encoder records the vertical position and is used to control tests automatically.

Tests are easily modified by the operator for specific testing requirements. Tests can be saved for future use, or can be created for a specific test.

As an option, this tester can also be used as a tensile testing device (sections E and F of the ASTM D3574 specification). Simply interchanging the foam indenter with a lower capacity load cell with manual sample grip, and installing the lower manual sample grip with four screws, now allows this unit great flexibility.

The UTM Tester is capable of a maximum load of 1500 pounds-force. The drive is mounted to a custom aluminum structure with a lower load sensing platform that has a vented top plate (per ASTM specifications) for placement of test samples.

The control PLC has a force and displacement readout display.

Foam contact is made with the provided 203 mm diameter indenter mounted to the power drive actuator with a flexible pivoting union (per ASTM specifications), and foam displacement is measured using a precision digital electronic scale on the front of the machine.

Although not in the ASTM D3574 specification, the Foam IFD Tester is capable of tension testing in an optional configuration.
